Marketing & Social Network Advantages You May Have Overlooked!

I was tending my Twitter account in the wee hours this morning and reviewed a Web Design firm named aShadow LLC out of Marysville Washington.  Their website is clean, sleek, simple and elegant!  Very few websites nowadays make you feel that “aahhhh, FINALLY!” feeling when you’ve been searching.  This one did it for me and I’ve started promoting them on my Twitter account.  Afterall, they provide the gambit:  Marketing, Web Design, eCampaigns, Project Management, Adminstration, Graphic Design, Brand/Identity services, just the kick in the pants any new or flailing small business needs to help them on a road to health.

One familiar thing struck me however when I visited the site.  Most business who provide such a variety of business services in the marketing arena often have a “secular/sacred” split between their business, and the promotion of their own brand.  You know the expression, the cleaning lady’s house is never clean?  I looked on the contact page and realized that their use of the following social media tools doesn’t really stand out:

LinkedIn (http://www.linkedin.com/company/1489047)

Twitter (@aShadowLLC) and they also have

Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Seattle-WA/AShadow-LLC/159910040707931)

The icons are present, but they are a “Shadow” at the very bottom of their pages so its easy to miss.  Another missed opportunity I see; have your web designer (coder) put the following in every web page for your business

<TITLE>My business Name + Slogan ~ Follow us on Twitter @aShadowLLC</TITLE>

At least by looking at the title  bar (the words just to the right of the browser icon) just above the “File, Edit, View” menu, potential customers who stumble across your site in search engine results will see that you are eating your own dog food and using the very tools you promote.  Shadow LLC isn’t the only business missing out on this meta data opportunity.

Another thing everyone should do is check your business cards.  Yes, I know its expensive to reprint but if you’ve not advertised (at least on the back of the card) that your customers can contact you a variety of ways through your social networking accounts, you might want to start the new year off right making the improvements and changes I’ve mentioned in this blog posting.

I do hope you all take a look at  Shadow LLC’s website and consider them if you’re in the market for assistance with your small business or start-up. So, to recap:  Business Cards, Your Website’s Contact Page, and the Meta Data in the “Title” code of your pages are additional avenues to cross-link your internet resources, drive traffic to every e-presence you maintain and give the search engine bots something to consume.

Happy Holidays!

Help for a Holiday Heartache

One of my employees, a veteran, has a fiance in Manilla.  He has been attempting since August to get her Visa approved to come join him in the United States.  Part of the approval process is that she must have documentation from each country she has visited.  There is also the issue of a medical exam which is only valid for six months and time is running out.  Lebanon has already provided necessary documentation, but now the major stopping points are:

  • Confusion at the U.S. Embassy in Manilla (they have her passport)
  • Police clearances from Bahrain and Qatar

He plans to take this issue up with the Nebraska State Immigration office  on Monday after the Thanksgiving holiday, but just in case the wheels of democracy run in traditional bureaucratic fashion, I want to be able to provide additional options for him.

I am not asking for money or for you to “DO” anything except perhaps use the power of your networks within social media to help me help my friend bring his fiance home in time for the holidays.  Please re-blog and ReTweet the Tweet that brought you to my post and spread the word–time is of the essence.

I do not wish to post his or her personal information but I will be providing this blog post link to him.  If you can help, please reply to this post with your contact information or the contact information of someone who can provide assistance.  Your assistance is greatly appreciated.  Let’s see if there’s any truth to the power behind crowd-sourcing.

Cheers and Happy Holidays to all who take the time to read.

Because of You…

Reflecting on the meaning of the life of my Grandmother
I realize that every person in our lives provides meaning
Adds value and context to our existence
Helps define your place in the world

Mentally walk with me a moment
Strawberries, Bananas, Christmas Trees, Fresh Cut Grass
If you pop a pistachio nut or a peppermint into your mouth…
You name the sensory stimulus (a song, a flavor, a smell)
These scents and flavors immediately transport you
To a specific place and time

People, I realize do the same for me
When someone comes to visit you that you haven’t seen in a while
Or that certain someone stops by the office or calls out of the blue
That expression, their eyes, voice, smile, their walk or laugh
Fill out and remind, reassure, and reaffirm the meaning of
your relationship with them and their purpose or value to you

Some people’s voices are like a hug, a rush of excitement
Or bring to you that warm comforting familiarity
Remind you that there are more ways to live life
Bring a sense of reassurance that everything’s going to be just fine
So to each of you who have played a part, entered stage right into my life
Thanks, to all of you, for adding context, providing meaning
For being…..you!

May, Might, Could, Can, Should…But Don’t

Do you?  Are you one of many humans out there who is really great at listening to friends problems, seeing obstacles and solutions and making recommendations to help them pick themselves up and press on, move ahead, and get back in the groove?  If so, do you also fit into that category of people who are better at saying but rarely doing yourself?

Well, I’m here to tell you, life is short in the grand scheme of things.  For the sake of this post, think of yourself as one of those toys that you buy for your kids that comes with a battery built in.  When the battery dies…the toy loses value in the eyes of your kid.  We have a finite existence that has a different life-span for each of us, but we each have one chance to make the most of our lives.

Why then, do we spend so much of our time asking and telling ourselves and others that we may, might, could, can, should our would, but don’t actually follow through with being, doing, choosing, creating, living….in the moment?  When we are pre-pubescent and teenagers, we are strapped into the roller coaster of emotional ups and downs.  When we become parents, we pine for the days when “we didn’t have responsibility” or we look at other peoples lives and see the lack or absence of excitement in our own?  Eventually, our bodies wear out and we are physically no longer able to do or be all that we desire, and it’s too late.  Once again, we find ourselves this time, feebly strapped into the merri-go-round of unfulfilled desires and dreams.

People, its time to wake up!  Every waking moment is an opportunity!  It’s as simple as making a choice to not waste your time in a boring job or sitting in front of the computer or TV anesthetizing yourself out of true action-filled living.  If it sounds like I’m preaching, I need to hear these words just as much as the next guy/gal.  We can make a difference in our own and the lives of others by choosing to choose!  Live, be, create, dream, but please whatever you do—start living, acting, doing, being present in the here and now and making a difference!

I challenge you to challenge yourself.  Even though this is the weekend to make your clocks “fall back”, make sure your internal clock is set to lean forward and accomplish–good luck and let me know if you need encouragement!
